lyrics

The phone goes off around eleven and I’m on my sixth or seventh drink
And I'm about to leave the bar and head home or at least that’s what I think
But J's brother got my number when J called him up from jail
They got him in Virginia on a PWI with a three thousand dollar bail

And that PWI in virginia would've been a fifty dollar ticket in the district, but no good deed goes unpunished, and J always one to deliver.
And it wouldn’t a been nothing on the other side of the river

I gotta make a stop by home to try and get the cash together
But I know J’s got a stash in case of days with shitty weather
And normally he can stay dry relying on his natural stealth,
But you can’t take any chances in the goddamn commonwealth

And the lights on 395 all got long trails as I head south across that bridge,
And I got a pain in my head that's starting to match the one in my liver.
And it wouldn’t a been nothing on the other side of the river.

Now it's 9 AM and I’m watching this teller count out a hundred and fifty Jacksons
And I’m sweating out the pills and all the booze from the previous evenings action
And my Hands are shaking when I take the cashier’s check
I’m bloodshot eyed and stumbling but I don’t know what the hell they expect.

And I walk around the corner to their building full of cages in the sunlight but still I shake and shiver
And it wouldn’t a been nothing on the other side of the river.

The moment I walk in, I feel my prospects start to darken
The magistrate's some old fuck, looks like goddamn grand moff tarkin
And this cop is getting real inquisitive about the contents of my blood
I tell ya the shit you gotta go through over a couple zips of bud

But I hand over the piece of paper and sit down to wait, hoping that DUI lawyer we know got a few more arrows left in his quiver
And it wouldn’t a been nothing on the other side of the river
